  Very nice comfortable home. Loved the master bedroom suite with its own private living room. Views are spectacular. The layout of the two upper bedroom with loft is very nice giving everyone some privacy.
  The kitchen lacked storage space for personal items. Recommend you bring a large tight closing storage bin for personal food items unless you want to share them with Mickey Mouse and his family. There is a large mud room next to kitchen which was a lifesaver for personal kitchen item storage and in keeping house clean from tracking mud and leaves inside.

  Our first stay here was in March to ski at Timberline. It was fun to return and visit during the warmer September weather. House has everything you could need for your stay. I recommend bringing tinfoil to line the old cookie sheets and plastic wrap for any leftovers. The patio was great for our toddler and dog to enjoy the fresh air and scenery without running off. Both large TVs have Netflix for streaming tv shows and movies (you’ll need your login info). There is WiFi but it tended to be slow and cut out at times while surfing the web, even after resetting it twice. The beds are comfy, bathrooms nice and clean. The Timberline-exclusive trailhead just outside Dolly Sods was awesome for taking a short hike to the top and walking down the Valley View Trail. We enjoyed playing cards at the large table, watching the setting sun through the trees, and taking in the crisp evening air.
  Unfortunately, the condition of the house went downhill since our last visit and we were quite disappointed to find a number of broken items (dishwasher rack, disposal, numerous lightbulbs). The rental agency was quick to replace the battery in our smoke detector that started beeping the evening after we arrived (that was a rough night). A number of improvements would go a long way towards increasing the rental experience:
  -Replacing the missing window screens and putting in screen doors to the patio would really help with ventilation. Replacements screens are still being made.
  -Due to higher humidity and lack of ventilation in the back living room, there is mold high up on the walls. Increasing ventilation and putting in a dehumidifier would really help. We avoided that room.
  -Weather stripping at bottom of the doors needs replacing. Creepy crawlies were finding their way in.
  -Owners should remove the trunk from the large bedroom. It is full of mothballs and makes the bedroom and adjacent rooms smell awful. We stuck it outside on the patio during our stay.

If we had no doctor's appointments, we would have stayed as long as possible. I would encourage others to stay at least a week or more.   We really enjoyed the house and all the space it provided. It is relatively close to everything we wanted to do with our children. Our dog came along too and the side entry washroom was a perfect spot to keep his crate at night and while we went canoeing. There was a wonderful variety of DVDs and games and the well-equipped kitchen afforded us the ability to prepare most of our meals. The large windows helped us appreciate all the beauty and peacefulness of outdoors. The running stream along the side of the property was a natural sound machine.

  This house is nestled in the woods, just like we were hoping. The pictures don't do the property justice. The master suite is huge and consists of two rooms. The sitting room in the back is full of windows and makes you feel like you're tucked in the woods while sitting there. The main areas of the house were big enough for the five of us to be comfortable. And this was a good central location for the hikes we wanted to do. And the back deck is gated off so we were able to relax with our morning coffee while the dogs roamed around safely on the deck.
  
  The furniture is a bit older, but in good shape and clean. And the kitchen is pretty well stocked although some of the baking pans need to be replaced.

  Our family of four (with two teens) recently stayed at Wald Haus. The location was fantastic, especially if you are interested in spending time in Dolly Sods, as there is an entrance that only those staying in the gated community that Wald Haus is a part of can use. It was a spacious property with everything we needed, and although it is part of a large community, the house itself was in a very private wooded setting. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen was well-stocked although no goods such as ziplock bags/foil were provided, so if those are needed, bring your own. We also were only given 3 dishwasher tablets for an 8 night stay; if you plan on eating most meals there, you may want to bring some of your own. Those were minor quirks and did not detract from the enjoyment of the property.

  We had a phenomenal time at Wald Haus. The neighborhood was safe and convenient to lots of great activities including ski slopes, golf course, restaurants, and hiking. There is even a trail into Dolly Sods in the neighborhood! We enjoyed watching wild turkeys in the yard from the comfort of the couch and cozy fireplace.   The cabin was very cozy and had everything we needed to have a comfortable stay. It was well worth the cost. The beds were comfortable and there were books and movies available for use and many places to sit. I loved the large windows that looked out on all sides. It felt a bit like we were in a treehouse. The view from the deck was beautiful, but there was not a lot of comfortable seating out there, so we didn't sit out there long. Even though it wasn't air conditioned, it stayed pretty cool inside, after the initial heat dissipated from being closed up when we arrived. There were a good bit of gnats and flies that got in, but they mostly stayed around the windows and didn't bother us too much. Having the garage to store our bikes and golf clubs, etc, was super convenient. We enjoyed fishing in the lake and my husband and I both caught a pretty sizable fish, even though we are definitely not fisherman! It was very close to Canaan and Blackwater Falls and the the shops at Davis. I would definitely stay here again. I bet it would be beautiful in the fall.

  It rained on us most of the time, bad timing on the part of the weather, but hey, it was November in the mountains of West Virginia. Yet, our stay was cozy, comfortable and warm. The view from the walls of windows was fabulous. We enjoyed watching deer and wild turkeys, as well as a "few" squirrels. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen well stocked. A few items were needing repair, but we had our own supplies. The kitchen was more than adequate for preparing a traditional Thanksgiving turkey (18 pound) dinner for a small group. We couldn't use the garage as the door really didn't open but it wasn't possible to unload directly into the house from the garage. A small creek that flowed through the driveway made it challenging to keep our feet and our dogs' feet mud free (white carpet in the house). Otherwise, we had a fabulous time in Wald Haus.

  Our family rented this home for our 3 night Thanksgiving vacation in this area. We were a party of 7: 4 adults and 3 children. This was a VERY spacious place, with ample space for everyone both while we slept and when we spent out Thanksgiving there. There are 3 bedrooms, two gorgeous living rooms (with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the wilderness) and a large kitchen/dining room area. Two of the bedrooms are on the top floor with a bathroom on that floor and a large hallway containing a sofa bed should that be needed. The main floor contains the master bedroom, with it's own bathroom as well as an additional bathroom (3 total in the whole place). The kitchen had everything you could possibly need to prepare all of your meals (as I said, we celebrated Thanksgiving and all pots, pans, etc... needed were available). There were ample towels, sheets and blankets and there is a washer and drier in the entry way. The driveway was plowed for us prior to our arrival and the setting was idyllic and we saw several deer, various birds and other wild life. I would strongly recommend this place to anyone exploring the area. The closest major store (Shop and Save in Davis) is a 15 min drive away. We checked in after 5pm, so needed to call in advance to make arrangements to get the key. We travel extensively and this was one of them most enjoyable accommodations I have stayed in. Our party was able to spread out when we needed to get out of each other's hair and sit together when it suited us. We were 3 generations (grandparents, parents and children) and it was perfect for everyone. When there was a dispute over what we would watch, we just went into the other living room and watched the other movie in there, so everyone was happy.

  Well, since this is our fourth stay at Wald Haus this review has to be positive. Great setting, wonderfully supplied/furnished home, good value price. The only improvement I would suggest is to cut the grass in the back yard. Certainly not a deal breaker, though, since there is not much of a need for renters to be down there unless they have children who might want to play there.

  Wald Haus was exactly as we expected--especially in light of it being our 3rd week there in the last 3 years. We love the house and it is so easy to deal with Best of Canaan--they go out of their way to make sure you have a great stay.
  
  Everything you could want is provided by the owners and the house is comfy and well furnished. We especially like the large back deck with a secure gate that allows our two Weims to wander out there with no worry of them running away into the interesting nearby woods.
  
  OK, the main idea of this is that we really love vacationing here. Now let's have a few small (VERY SMALL!!) negatives that will make this review seem more realistic:
  
  1. Door locks have been changed--that would not usually be a problem but it now means the realtor keys will only work on the front door--not the side "mud room" entrance way, the garage, or the back door.
  
  2. Grass in back yard seems to never be mowed--this could be a problem if you have young children who you'd like to let play outside where you can watch them from the deck.
  
  3. Well, I can't think of a 3rd.... Walk Haus is just that good!!!

  We picked the right weekend to come ski! The staff were very courteous. The process was simple. However, I have two complaints:
  
  1. It was 11 degrees Friday when we showed up and the heat was set down to 50. It took all night to get warm with the week baseboard heat. That's uncomfortable and completely unacceptable.
  
  2. The booking process through Home Away was confusing, with hidden fees. I have already complained about this.
  
  I look forward to coming to Canaan Valley in the future.

  This was truly a retreat into the woods. Relaxing in either of the two "living rooms" was like sitting right in the woods but with great warmth and comfort.   We liked Wald Haus so much last September that we decided to rent another week this summer.
  
  Just about any thing you might want is there--lots of kitchen stuff, 2 LED TV's, 2 DVD & VHS combo players, books and videos, wifi, completely stocked kitchen, plenty of nice linens, lovely gated deck (great for our 2 Weimeraners), two "living rooms", spotlighted driveway, LOTS of cut firewood, a huge garage in case of storms, etc. It is very clean, furnished in great taste, and just feels like you're borrowing a friend's home for a week.
  
  The only suggestion we can make is to have the back yard grass mowed. It was about 8" high both times we were there. Not a real problem for us (a retired couple), but if a family with children were to rent, it would provide them with a secure and fun play area when mowed. Of course, grass mowing in Timberline seems to be somewhat "Optional" for many of the units anyway.
  
  All and all, it is a great house, a great vacation value, and we plan to return there again. It is our new favorite in Timberline.
  
  As always, Best of Canaan rental staff is top-notch and super helpful.

  This was a clean, private house near Timberline. It was nice to stay with the dog. No fenced yard if you need that. It was pretty big and the windows onto the woods were just great! I picked up some firewood at the grocery store; try to remember to do that before you get there. It was great having a fire after walking at the parks during the day.
  
  Unlike every other rental I've had from VRBO (around 15) there was no coffee, condiments, seed for the feeders or a light on anywhere when I came well after dark. I had notified the rental company I'd be late and they did give me good instructions and access to the keys from their office not too far away, though. It was no biggie, but those little touches make VRBO nicer than extended stay hotels.
  
  I'd recommend this unit to others. It's worth the price they're charging relative to the area.

  We've rented six or more Timberline homes in the past few years (love the development and it trails!), and I have to say Wald Haus (OK, what does that name mean?) was one of the best.
  
  We somrtimes encounter malfunctioning appliances, less than desirable kitchen ware, poorly maintained property, etc. This is definitly not the case with Wald Haus. The owners left almost everything in place--and it is tastefully furnished. It feels like the owners just left and handed you the keys.
  
  We loved sitting out on the deck with the beautiful fall foliage, walking our two Weimaraners on the safe Timberline roads and trails, deciding which of the two TV rooms to settle into each evening, and using the well-kept BBQ. Thanks, Col. and Mrs. Bernaidi, for allowing us into your nice home. We certainly hope to return next year!
  
  BTW, a few reviewers said the furnishings were "dated." We do not agree at all. They house is well-kept and the furniture is perfect.

  We have stayed in many homes on Old Timberline over the past 24 years.This was our first long weekend spent at Wald Haus. Since we travel with our furry companion, choices are limited. We prefer homes near the top with a view and in walking distance to the trails, however none were available to us. This home was very well suited for our group of 8 and we would definitely happily rent this home again upon return. The house set up is a bit strange with the master bedroom between the two living areas, but we managed that just fine. The living area with the hardwood floors on the corner is a delight! The TVs are new, which the younger crowd was delighted to see, so they are HDMI compatible, bring your chords to attach media. Wifi was off and on which is probably the case in all of the houses. We hiked a 8.8 mile trail from the top of Old Timberline, the longest day hike ever for us. It was wet, but gorgeous! Hiking trails for Dolly Sods are now available online. We fished in the lake, but not as much luck as usual. I saw some VERY LARGE fish, think river monster size, so perhaps it's being taken over by carp? This was also our first time renting from Best of Canaan.They were wonderful.

The home was clean and had plenty of space for 8 people(4 adults &4 kids). The kids enjoyed just playing outside around tin the home, it's beautiful. Thank you for allowing us to bring our labradoodle dog also, it was nice to see his smiling face when we returned from skiing. This home is not too far from Timberline. It is not within walking distance, but we drove back to eat lunch at the house, about 2 miles. And the rental office was very helpful with info!!

  We all quite liked the Wald Haus. It had plenty of room, was very convenient to the ski resorts, and contained plenty of blankets, pots & pans, and everything else we could need in our stay. It wasn't particularly new or up-to-date but it was well kept-up and comfortable. The sleds in the garage and the wood-burning fireplace were very fun. I recommend it to anyone who wants a large comfortable place out in Canaan Valley. Although on a map it looks like it is kind of close to other houses, the property is really quite large and full of trees so it feels more like you are alone in a forest.

  This house was so enjoyable. The large deck was beautiful. My favorite thing was to sit on the deck with a cup of coffee and wait for the deer to show up in the yard. At night, we turned on the deck light and there was a raccoon eating out of the bird feeder. He put on quite a show for us most nights. With 2 living rooms, everybody could spread out if they wanted to. And even though it was July, we had a few fires at night in the fireplace to take the chill off. The area is beautiful for mountain biking, hiking, fishing, kayaking. As usual, we really hated to leave at the end of the week.

  The propery was NOT as described--it was so much MORE!! The family & our dogs loved it!! Such a relaxing place inside & on the deck, with the gate on the deck we were able to let the dogs run free. No one had to wait on the bathroom, or had to share a TV. BEST of CANAAN was such a awesome group to deal from the time we were making reservations until after we were home. Had to leave early due to my dog getting a pinched nerve--I thought it was something worse and feared the worse--The staff followed up on my dogs condition and was so prompt in sending something I forgot. The ONLY thing that could be added to WALD HAUS is a hot tub--which we knew from the start they didn't have. Stayed in several rentals & dealt with different Realties this Rental & Best of Canaan has been the best all around. The view--pure nature--was what I wanted & needed. Will be working with BEST OF CANAAN for vacation next year.

  This house is really great and I would definitely recommend it to other renters. The check in and check out process was easy. I came with 8 adults and there was plenty of space. Its about a 2 minute drive to Timberline Ski and a 5 minute drive to Canaan Valley Ski. The fireplace was great after the slopes and the house was stocked with enough firewood to last for days. The kitchen was nice and well stocked. I loved the deck and the floor to ceiling windows looking out from the living room.
  The driveway is a bit steep and the roads can be icy, so they are serious about the 4 wheel drive requirement, but I found from experience that if there are members of your group driving separately with no 4 wheel drive, there is a parking lot by the main gate (but they will have to be picked up and driven to the actual house).
  The only thing that I did not like about this house was the decor, but I suppose that is just personal preference.

  We just got back from a week at Wald Haus. It's a beautiful, private property on a heavily treed hillside. Convenient to Canaan Valley SP or Refuge (10 min), Davis, Thomas, Blackwater Falls SP (25 min), Dolly Sods (40 min) and more. Everything was essentially as described, except we initially had no internet service (resolved quickly after mentioning it to the folks in the office). Home is clean and comfortable. Looking forward to returning in the winter.

  Great central location for visiting area sites. Our dogs loved watching the deer and turkey from the floor-to-ceiling windows as well as the deck. I only wish we could have let them run around, but the long hikes during the day wore them out well enough.

  We had a group of eight friends staying at the Wald Haus and had an amazing time! We trailered our bikes there to ride WV roads and due to the location we couldn't get the trailer down the driveway - but it was no problem. The guards were happy to let us place the trailer at the gate; can't ask for better security than that. Donna and her team are beyond professional and accommodating - they helped with check-in and check-out to the needs of our schedule and are more like friends than just property managers. The house itself was spacious, secluded and calm - perfect getaway for up to 8 people. We will definitely come back every Summer!

  We really enjoyed our stay and felt like the rental for the week was a great deal. The property is situated in the woods, which we really enjoyed. It did not have a mountain view, but we have found in the past that a high elevation meant a long drive every time you leave and come back to the property. We found this location perfect for us.
  
  Since we arrived in the evening and left early, we never personally met the property management company. It did feel a little odd using the convenience store next door for key drop off and pick up.
