  Our stay at the Best of Canaan "cabin" (it's so bug it's difficult to refer to it as a cabin) was nothing but great. Being told ahead of time that the cabin was well stocked did not prepare me for just how well stocked it was. If you need to cook it, bake it, slice it (they have a meat slicer) you have what you need. A chef wouldn't know what to do with all of the kitchen equipment.
  Moving on to location. It couldn't be in a more centralized location based on the local attractions. Minutes from Davis, Thomas, and Blackwater falls. Short drives to caverns, Seneca Rocks, and Dolly Sods Wilderness.
  The cabin was clean and well stocked with towels. The check in was hassel-less took literally 1 minute.
  
  I could go on all day but in short I highly recommend this cabin and will probably go back.

  Second year in a row for this house visited by a group of 12 fishermen and golfers. The house is well outfitted with nothing really missing or needed. The amount of refrigerator/freezer space is awesome and the kitchen has everything. There are two maintenance issues that we reported last year that it's hard to believe have not been addressed. First, the pool table is atrocious and, as reported last year, is in desperate need of refinishing. Second, the ceiling fan in the upstairs sitting room is not usable and needs replaced. It makes huge noise when run. Please repair/replace these items.

We have stayed at this property for the last 3 years in a row and several times before that.We loved the new living room furniture you put in this year.The house has everything you could want. Kitchen is very well stocked. Bedrooms are all good. Hot tub was nice and clean. When you walk in and around the house everything thing seemed generally clean The only negative we noticed this year was we saw a lot of dust on the light bulbs, door frames and woodwork. Looks like they cleaned good but neglected those areas for quite a while.. We will definitely return. Hopefully they will address this problem.

  Great service from the team at Best of Canaan. We own a higher end vacation rental ourselves and appreciate the time, budget and attention it takes to keep up a property. There were many issues that need attention in this house; lots missing grout in the kitchen floor, broken dishwasher rack, poorly repaired drywall patches in bathroom, worn off finishes on wood towel bars and practically all wood surfaces, dining room table, etc. Positives; carpet in living room appeared new, as did the leather couches. It's awesome that the owners are willing to share this place and that it accommodates our whole family, but price to value is way off. We will be renting smaller places in proximity next year. Timberline resort is amazing and we've been many times- kudos to the new ownership!

  We were a group of 15, family and friends. We have stayed in this house multiple times. We have even stayed here before they added on the 4 extra bedrooms. The house was clean. Some of the furniture is getting a little tired looking. The chairs in the dining room could definitely use some pads on the seats. We spent a lot of time around the table and the wooden chairs get hard to sit on after a while. The kitchen is very well equipped. We didn't want for anything for cooking or serving our meals. The only thing I would suggest in the kitchen is a larger updated coffee maker. We would have loved to have had a fire ring or a fire pit to sit around outside at night. We thought the downstairs smelled a little musty and it was very chilly down there at night.I am pretty sure our group would stay at this property again but a few updates would be great.

  My six siblings and I (along with our significant others) have rented a large house every year in many different parts of the country for the past 15 years or so. The “Mountain Lair” house was one of the better houses we have rented in the past. The bedroom layout aloud people to go to bed early or wake up late without being bothered by others staying up late in the family room or getting up early for a noisy breakfast. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes, glasses, cooking equipment and 2 working gas grills.
  
  We all did plenty of hiking (all within reasonable distances) and several of our group got 5 day passes for indoor swimming at a local resort 10 minutes away at a very reasonable price.
  
  We got lucky with the weather (sunny and in the low 60s) for the second week of October. Fall foliage was beautiful as you can imagine.
  
  Lastly, the Best of Canaan Staff were very helpful, answering many questions that we had prior to our visit.

  We really love this house. We rented in May 2017 and May 2019 and were saddened to see it's not been maintained as well as expected. There were several areas that were very dusty and had cob webs. The upstairs master bedroom had several carpet beetles. The dishwasher and ice maker did not function. The dryer door had to be held a certain way while closing to latch. We love this house so much we'll be back next year, but hope to see it in better shape.

  This was our 7th trip to this home. We always have a wonderful time. The weather this year was rainy but Saturday was nice. It was nice that the ice maker was working this year. We grilled out but only one grill was usable and that was after a very good cleaning which took a long time. I can't believe that the renters leave the grills so bad. Last year both grills didn't work so I know the owner purchased a new grill but it was a mess and the other one was broke. The home was very clean and we do really enjoyed our stay. We will be returning next year.

  We have discovered a new tradition! After many years of staying over 10 miles away in an eight-bedroom house, we now will be annually staying slope side in Mountain Lair! Granted it is more costly to rent, but the convenience, accommodations, etc. were well worth it for everyone in our group. The only drawback was the small parking lot. But once everyone arrived, including one couple from Florida, nobody needed their vehicle until we were leaving on Sunday. There is a parking lot close by for the extras. Like I said in the title, "Great Place!! Great Time!!" Everyone is looking forward to returning to our new location next year!!

  Overall Mountain Lair is a very nice and huge property. During the first part of the week we had almost 20 people and everyone had plenty of space. Everything was very clean.
  
  High points:
  1. The kitchen was wonderful. Plenty of everything.
  2. They had the best hot tub I have ever seen at a rental property. It got a lot of use and worked great. it even had a built in radio.
  3. The electronic equipment throughout the house was excellent. They even had Blu-ray players connected to most of the TVs.
  4. The huge porch and porch furniture was very nice.
  
  Low Points:
  1. The Internet connection was really bad. It would come and go and sometimes not work for long periods of time.
  2. There were ants in the kitchen. Not a lot but enough to bother some of the ladies.
  3. The satellite TV service was very spotty at times. It did not take much cloud cover to mess up reception.
  4. We had problems with the two upstairs toilets. It did not take much to stop them up. It seems there flow rate was poor. Plenty of other toilets though.
  
  But overall we really enjoy our stay at Mountain Lair and would probably return but would like to see a significant Internet connectivity improvement.

  We had a great time leaving the kids behind for a Memorial Day weekend to celebrate my husband finishing up his master's program. The kitchen has everything you could possibly need (TWO of most things!) and we never ran short of plates, linens, or felt crowded. The only downside is the wi-fi is a little slow - might want to get a faster connection for streaming movies (it cut out several times). Overall, would absolutely stay here again.

  For the passed 2 years we have stayed at Mountain Lair. We have been making a yearly trek to Timberline for over 20 years. This is our favorite house. There are 20 of us, with extra people who just come for the day to ski. The house is large enough to accommadate us all. With the three floors you would hardly know there were that many people there. The beds are comfortable, bathrooms are clean and the kitchen is to die for. The improvements in the kitchen since last year are amazing. The new stove with a griddle, 2 ovens, and large center island were perfect for cooking and preparing meals. Easy ski in and out access to slope. Perfect weekend. We will be back next year.

  We have been renting this house for 5 years and wouldn't dream of skipping a year. We go there in the winter and it is a ski in and ski out home. Most people go out for one or two runs, return to the home and then go out again. It's so convenient. It's also warm and inviting. The newly renovated kitchen is beautiful and you won't want for one piece of equipment for your cooking needs. The house is completely stocked with towels and linens. All you have to bring to this house is food, clothing and great family or friends. It's the best home I have rented and I have rented quite a few. BTW, the management team is second to none! We had a slight issue with the house and they took care of it in less than 2 hours.

  We had a great Christmas party with brothers and sisters... left a small list of items I thought needed addressed but overall really enjoyed our stay. We felt four of the beds were to high for my older sisters to get into.. I went out and had to buy some step stools..
