  We had a large group stay here for a long weekend. The house had more than enough space for everyone, even with all bedrooms filled with people. All bedrooms and communal spaces were very clean and tidy. Kitchen, dining room, and living room were great for our group with a large dining table and couch. Deck out back is a great spot to unwind with plenty of seating and a hot tub.
  Only issue we encountered was lack of clarity from the property management about how garbage / check out is handled. There was the usual informational binder inside the house with general house information and check out information, but the binder didn't say anything about how garbage is handled (we found out you have to call the office and arrange a pickup) or proper check out procedures (we found out you have to physically go into the office to check out). This is, of course, very minor - we would definitely come back here for another stay. Our whole ground had an amazing time!

  I grew up in WV and spent a great deal of time during the year in Canaan Valley. As an adult, this was the 39th year for our friend group’s winter trip to Canaan. During that time we have stayed in a number of different properties but have rented Lost River Lodge the most due to its overall size (bedrooms and bathrooms). While there have been some improvements to the property through the years, its overall condition is fair and there is definitely work that should be done. Furniture is showing wear and tear, the hardwood floors are very rough in spots and have had the finish worn off in high traffic areas. The shower heads are in poor condition, particularly in primary bathroom and should be replaced. It should be noted for fairness, the home’s HVAC system has been replaced and the general warmth of the home is better (particularly in the ground floor) which was appreciated. The cleanliness of the property should also be improved. Two bathroom toilets appeared to be missed and there were multiple smears and stickiness on the living room TV screen and remote. There is a “leak here” sticker left over from at least 2 winters on the family room ceiling. The silverware in the kitchen drawer was very dirty and had to be washed before using.
  
  To be fair, our group knows this house very well because of our repeated use through the years. We likely see things others may not, but it doesn’t make the improvements needed less important.
  
  On the positive side, the property is located in a prime spot in Winterset, offers outstanding physical size and convenience.
  
  The rental company - Best of Canaan’ staff is always helpful and ready to assist with questions and problems.

  Our recent trip made for our fourth consecutive year at Lost River Lodge! This home could not be in a better location. We love the ability to ski in and out, soaking in the hot tub slope-side, and the easy access by vehicle (although AWD/4WD is recommended). A few members of our group enjoyed the new gym and spa this year which is just a couple of minutes away as well. This home is the ideal space for our group. This year, we had 13 adults and 5 children under age 2. The ground level features three bedrooms with queen beds, two full bathrooms, two twin beds tucked into the hallway, and an additional living room space (although this space is rarely used for us and would probably function better as an additional bedroom if such renovations could be made). The main floor features a large bedroom with a king bed and attached full bathroom, a laundry room/mud room, half bath, fully equipped kitchen, large kitchen table, and a large living room area with ample seating, a gas fireplace, and big windows to watch skiers pass by. The main floor also provides easy access to the hot tub and slopes. Upstairs features two king bedrooms with attached full bathrooms, a room with two twin beds, a queen bedroom, and a full bathroom. We were able to get into our home by noon this year which was awesome! Management is always great to work with, and they are always very quick to respond to our needs. We have already booked our trip for next year and are looking forward to returning to our home away from home!

  Best of Canaan is correctly named. This property and the managers are the best! I ended up calling them a couple times during our visit for minor things and the response was prompt, professional and friendly. They genuinely didn’t seem bothered by my calling to ask how to turn on the flood lights, to check the hot tub and to collect trash. Will definitely rent from them again! The kitchen was well equipped with a fancy Keurig combo machine, a traditional coffee pot, a crock pot, blender, pots & pans and plenty of dishes. They even supplied hand soaps, toilet paper in each bathroom and a full set of towels for each bed! One thing I didn’t notice till I arrived is there are actually 2 twin beds in the basement “hallway.” From the pictures I thought there was one. Plenty of space for our teenagers to spread out on their own floor! The only thing I didn’t give 5 stars to is the condition of the house as it is showing signs of wear which is to be expected. We have already booked again for next year.

  This year made our third year in a row staying at Lost River Lodge. We thoroughly enjoy this space as it is large enough to accommodate our group with plenty of bedrooms, a large living space, and an enormous kitchen table. The best part of it is the ski in/out location. The hot tub, fully equipped kitchen, and mud room with an extra fridge and washer/dryer made our 4 night stay even more comfortable.
  
  I have a few critiques after year three that would not deter me from booking again, but I feel they should be mentioned. The main level and upstairs mattresses are definitely showing visible signs of wear (divits), and the shower head in the bathroom attached to the king bedroom to the far left on the top level needs replaced. The only other complaint from the group was a fowl smell coming from under the kitchen sink when the cabinet doors were open. We did not notice any leaking so that may require some investigation.
  
  We hope to visit again next year and appreciate how great it is booking through Best of Canaan!

  We took a multifamily vacation to this house. 15 people, and we never felt crowded. A lot of the furniture is older, but it’s very sturdy. The house is very clean. Hot tub worked great and was a wonderful treat for the kids. Right on the ski slope. The kitchen was equipped with so many pots pans, and all the things that you would need to cook family dinners as well as coffee pots, and Keurig. Also a second fridge in the laundry room. Office staff were extremely friendly and helpful when we had trouble with the Wi-Fi. (Our fault, not theirs)Would recommend to anyone.

  Lost River Lodge was the perfect place for our family of 13 to celebrate the 4 th of July weekend! The cabin is absolutely beautiful with a bedroom and bath for each family. The kitchen is stocked with plenty of dishes and utensils for use while you stay. You will need to provide extra garbage bags, paper towels and dishwashing detergent if you cook a lot. Our family enjoyed the large dining table for family meals. The bedrooms had either king or queen beds. Our grandson enjoyed his own room with twin beds. The family also enjoyed the large deck and hot tub. We also had a fire in the fire pit each evening. Canaan Valley and the darling towns of Thomas and Davis provided much to do. We had dinner at Milo’s Cafe and it was delicious! All in all it was a very enjoyable weekend and the cabin was great! The only recommendation I would make is that the two grills need to be replaced. The propane grill would not light and the charcoal grill has seen it’s better days. Other than that, it was a perfect place to stay! We would love to return!

  This was the perfect house for a ski vacation. Right on the slopes and plenty of room to gather together or slip off for some privacy. We loved the house!

  The only issue with this year stay was the fact that we could not use any bathroom the first night or early the next morning. Because of the backup the downstairs had a very strong odor, however the response to the situation was very good and the problem fix by lunch. This was the only issue that was a problem. Thanks

  What do give your family for Christmas when they need nothing? Answer: a Ski Vacation in Canaan. We have been doing this for the past 15+ years and it is a great way to keep the families in touch.They grow up fast. One could not make this year because he doing his duty in the Army.   We've spent time at Canaan for over 20 years, both winter and summer. The last few years were at Lost River Lodge. We always love it. It is right on the ski slope. It also easily accommodates our large group - 8 families, various ages.

  Love the house and location. The stove and microwave quite old and slow (especially gas stove). The towels, hot pads... are really starting to show wear and discolor as are some of the pots and pans. The DVD player on mail floor (not ground level)tv room does not work (didn't last yr either)...blueray might be nice since most DVD's are now this if you bring your own. Also the sectional couch in main floor left reclining section leans sideways when reclined (just to let you know)other furniture in good shape. It would be nice to have the Tv on 3rd floor slopeside master up on a higher stand since can't see the whole screen when in bed (too low). Love the layout, view of slope, gas fireplace, big table for our family gathering, nice hot tub. Cathedral ceiling light bulbs need replacing (only 2 out of 6 worked) as did lights over island in kitchen and several other places. Master king mattress on main floor is quite worn. We didn't find dish detergent or laundry detergent there when arrived (think this was mentioned in the new write-up). Also a few bathrooms didn't have spare toilet paper roll but all had soap and liquid soap at sink which was great. These comments may seem picky but just some suggestions to make the stay even more enjoyable.
